A balanced scoring effort helped Western Kentucky pull away from a relentless Florida International team Saturday at E.A. Diddle Arena. Justin Johnson led the way for WKU by matching a career high 25 points along with seven rebounds in a 83-76 win.
Darius Thompson added 18 to go along with four assists and three steals, Josh Anderson scored 13 and collected nine rebounds and Lamonte Bearden came off the bench to score 15, dish out four assists and collect four steals.
The Hilltoppers (18-7, 10-2 Conference USA) head back to Texas next week, first facing North Texas (14-11, 7-5 CUSA) on Thursday.
With 2:11 to play Saturday, Michael Douglas drained a 3 to cut the score to 71-69. Johnson hit a couple free throws on the other end followed by a Bearden slashing layup from the left baseline to extend the margin back out to six.
The Panthers, who had come back time and time again Saturday, couldn’t muster one last rally in their upset bid.
The 18 regular-season wins for WKU matches the most since the 2014-15 squad.
